Grand Reopening – Coffee Morning – UPDATE

IMPORTANT UPDATE – To improve our safety the coffee morning will now be held outdoors on the patio area of the hotel which can be accessed via the bar.

To celebrate the fact that we can again meet, albeit responsibly, we have planned a special coffee morning. This will be held in the Armagh City Hotel on September 8th from 10 am to 11.30 am.   This will give you the opportunity to meet the new committee, the conveners for the different groups, discuss the range of activities on offer and of course to meet with and chat to your fellow members.

We are also offering you the opportunity to extend an invite to a friend or two who are currently not members of the U3A who may be thinking of joining. In this way we can extol our virtues and demonstrate our congeniality.

To give us some idea of the numbers we can expect,  can you email, Dennis Hay (armagh.u3a.sec@gmail.com) and how big your group is likely to be.

Let’s hope as many members and friends can attend so that we can kick off the new season in style and to restart Armagh & District U3A after the dreadful time we have all had to endure.

For more details see our Newsletter.

June Meeting

Our next monthly meeting will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, 16th June at 11:00 am with the meeting opening at 10:30 am to allow people to get logged in and chat beforehand.

We are privileged to have received permission from the Ulster Orchestra to show a video of a special recording of their concert “Sofa Swing” in which the Orchestra is conducted by Steve Barnett and features the soloist, Peter Corry.  The concert lasts about 40 minutes and features a number of songs and instrumental pieces, the songs include Strangers in the Night and New York, New York.

Tuesday Walking Group

The Tuesday Walking Group walk on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Meeting in the carpark in the Demesne next to the children’s playground. Numbers are currently limited to 15 participants, though this may change as Covid restrictions are relaxed. For further details contact Patricia McConville.

Bridge Group Goes online and now once again in person.

  • For further details of the arrangements for the Bridge sessions in person see the October newsletter.
  • Classes for those who have completed the beginners’ phase and wish to develop their bridge skills. There are 6 classes that consist of sets of videos followed by questions designed to explore the material presented. Each includes a brief resume of a basic idea then adds additional advanced material.
  • We are also in the process of setting up a weekly bridge playing session (the equivalent of those held in the Golf Club) on-line using the BridgeBase Online internet platform. This is an Americal system so the cost of each afternoon’s play is $1.50 (just over a pound) but we are negotiating to halve this cost.

If you are interested in either of these please contact Dennis Hay at..

Ceramic flax flowers project at the F. E. McWilliams Gallery

The F. E. McWilliams gallery in Banbridge has organised pottery workshops at Mount Ida pottery in which some members of the Armagh U3A have taken part.

The project involved making lots of flax flowers in ceramic which will be installed in the gallery garden for their 10th anniversary. The “Weeping Poppies” from London were the inspiration for this idea.

You will be able to see the results of their work and that of the other participating groups in the gallery gardens at the F. E. McWilliams gallery in Banbridge from 22nd March 2018.
